"How are you?" is a nice question. It's a friendly way people in the United States greet each other. But " How are you?" is also a very unusual (不平常的) question. It is a question and it often doesn't need an answer. When a person asks "How are you?". be expects(期待) to hear the answer "Fine", even if the person's friend isn't fine. The reason is that "How are you?" isn't really a question, and "Fine" isn't really an answer. They are common (常见的) ways of saying " Hello" and "Hi".
Sometimes people also don't say exactly (准确地) what they mean, For example, when someone asks, " Do you agree?" the other person may be thinking, "No, I don't agree. I think you are wrong." But it isn't a very polite(礼貌的)way, so the other person may say, " I'm not so sure." It's a nicer way to say that you don't agree with someone.
People also don't say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking with other people. For example, many conversations on the phane end when one person says, " I've got to go now." often, the person wants to stop talking, so he gives an excuse(借口), "Someone is at the door." "Something is burning(烧焦)."Theexcuse may be real, or it may be not, perhaps the person doesn't want to talk any more but it isn't very polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn't hurt(伤害)the other person's feelings. It's an important way that people try to be nice to each other and it's a part of the game of language.
