  Text9

W: When you were little, what did you want to be?

M: When I was 5, I wanted to be a spaceman, mainly because most of my toys were spaceships, I think. But at around the age of 6, I decided that I wanted to join the army.

  W: Why the army?

M: Well, maybe it was because my toys changed from spaceships to tanks! But I think it was mainly because my uncle was in the army and he used to come around to our house quite often and tell stories to my parents. I thought it sounded like fun. What about you? What did you want to be when you were young?

W: I wanted to be a shopkeeper for quite a while. Like you, I think it was related to how I used to play. My sister and I used to set up shops—we’d sell anything we found lying around the house, and then visit each other’s shops and buy things with pretend money. Of course, we weren’t really buying and selling stuff. It was just for fun.

M: Well, neither of us joined the army or became shopkeepers, did we?

  Text10

Freezing weather in the past few days has caused problems in many parts of central and southern Europe. After more than 200 people were killed by low temperatures in eastern Europe, the snowy weather has moved west, covering Bosnia in 2 metres of snow. Bosnian farmers have had problems feeding their cows because of the snow, and as a result, milk production there has dropped by 30%. The most deaths have occurred in nearby Ukraine--- 120 people there have died in temperatures as low as –30 degrees. Some were found half-buried in the snow in distant parts of the country. Meanwhile, Rome is caught in the heaviest snowstorm of the past 27 years. Buses there are unable to operate, and the mayor is under heavy criticism for not having snow-moving equipment at the ready. However, the government has sent workers out throughout the city to help clear out the snow before a further drop in temperature. Could all this trouble have been avoided? Probably not. But with extreme weather becoming more common, the leaders of Europe would be well advised not to treat this winter as a one-off occurrence.
